  • Notes
    • After her telling us of her visit to the "Old Widow James' house", where she always wore
black and only had one arm, I started to verify her heritage to Jesse James. This has now been well documented, with her grandfather, John R. James being a brother to Robert
Sallee James, Jesse's father. Lula was very tiny, standing about 4'11" and always with a trim figure. However, she had come from a very rigid Methodist household and always had a very formal demeanor. (Her sister, Myrtle, said that they could not go to dances and had a very strict upbringing.) She arose every a.m., as I knew her, at 5:30 a.m., to warm up the house for Grandpa and then cook him breakfast. Even though modern electric washing machines were around, in the 50's, she continued to wash underwear on a washboard, and Grandpa took all of the rest to a cleaner/laundry...including sheets.
